Mung bean (Vigna radiata), also known as green gram, has a long history of usage as traditional medicine. Mung bean is mainly cultivated in the Eastern, Southeastern and Southern parts of Asia. India is the largest producer of Mung beans in the world, with about 2.5 million metric tons being produced annually.

Mung beans is a low water intensive drought-resistant crop, and hence a sustainable source of protein. Every 100 grams of mung bean comprises about 25% protein, among which globulin (60%) and albumin (25%) are the primary storage proteins.
